Delhi is celebrating its 100th birthday as India’s capital on 12 December 2011. Delhi was crowned as the capital city of India in 1911, replacing Calcutta (now Kolkata). On 12 December 2011, Delhi has completed a total of 100 years as capital city of India.

From 1911 to 2011, Delhi has changed a lot. Population has increased from 24 lakhs to 1.68 crore. Delhi has some world tour sites like Qutab Minar, Red Fort, Humayun’s Tomb, Jantar Mantar, and Purana Quila. The city of Delhi also has some famous temples like Akshardham temple, Lotus temple, ISKON temple, Swami Lakshminarayan temple, Jhandewalan and Chattarpur temple.

Delhi is also called the “Dhadkan of India”. For all Delhiites, it is a very wonderful moment, when their own city is celebrating ten decades of its existence.

Between the 12th and the 19th century AD, Delhi was the capital for many rulers. Siri, Tughlakabad, Jahanapanah, Ferozabad, Dinpanah, Shergarh and Shahajahanabad are the historic ‘seven cities’ that took shape in Delhi. Shahajahanabad, built by Shah Jahan between 1639 and 1648 AD remained the capital of the Mughal Empire until 1857. The eighth city, or the present New Delhi, was built by the British Empire and is the one which is celebrating its 100 years today.

'It's not just because of Azim Premji's enormous wealth that he is compared to the American technologist turned philanthropist,' the magazine said about India's third richest citizen with a net worth of $13 billion, according to Forbes magazine.

'It is Premji's unprecedented philanthropy, that recently has borne out the Gates comparison,' it said noting the chairman of the IT firm Wipro, recently contributed nearly $2 billion to a rural education project.

Anna Hazare, who is leading a popular campaign demanding tough new laws to curb corruption, is the next Indian who features on the list, ranked at number 37. He figures for 'asking the world's largest democracy to live up to its billing'.

My MPhil papers were related to trade liberalization and informality, based on evidences from the manufacturing sector in India. The size of the informal sector in India is growing. The government should patronize it. India's fiscal deficits and interest rates also interest me.

Baby boy with 34 fingers and toes sets record

Baby boy with 34 fingers

Akshat, a baby boy over the age of one, registered his name in the Guinness world records for having a total of 34 fingers and toes.

He has set the record for having the highest number of fingers and toes and hails from the Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh.

Amrita Saxena, the mother of the child, said it was difficult for her to believe that her son broke the world record, until a family friend convinced her.

"He (family friend) read on the internet about the baby born in China with 31 fingers. Then he said that my boy has broken the record of having 34 fingers. At first, I was not convinced at all. It was hard to believe that my son has broken the record. But later, he along with my husband and my younger sister registered the data in the Internet. Then I was asked to submit certain documents after which his name was in the Guinness World Records," added Saxena.

Doctors attending to the child informed the mediapersons that it was a rare phenomenon and diagnosed it as polydactyly.

"The person who is diagnosed with it is polydactylic. It is due to certain defects in the bone development of the uterus. The reason behind this defect can be either developmental congenital formation or chromosomal anomalies, which is due to maternal infection or drugs," said Dr. Parul Gupta, a gynaecologist.

Gupta further explained that this congenital physical anomaly could be easily cured by performing a surgery.
